Merrimack Street residents are grateful to Whittier Tech students for building two new bases that allowed the huge holiday bell and the Christmas music that plays day and night to move a little further down the road. Metal Fabrication students built the bell last year, which rode on HC Media's Santa Parade float, before it was installed downtown. This year it was Whittier's carpentry students who made two 5x10 foot bases to support the columns for a 48-foot beam that suspends the bell in the center of Merrimack Square. It was installed Friday, Dec. 9th, while Carpentry Teacher Earl Corr and three of his students looked on. "I wanted them to see what is involved in a project like that," Mr. Corr said. "It's pretty impressive."
