The cake that took first place

Sophomore Kim Roope is an expert on sugar. She has taken special courses and studied its creative uses, especially the kind extracted from beets called Isomalt. She used it like a pro to create her Fire & Ice cake sculpture that won First Place in the statewide SkillsUSA Techspo Cake Decorating Contest. 

Kim, a student in Culinary Arts, frosted the four-tiered cake with buttercream and covered it with fondant that she airbrushed --orange on one side, blue on the other -- then made spiral designs in red and yellow with fondant to create the flames, and white to make the icicles that mirror them.
