The Whittier Tech English Department is pleased to share the Term 1 Students of the Term for Choice Reading for the 2024-2025 school year! Each student received a certificate for their outstanding dedication to choice reading. The certificates were signed by the student’s English teacher. The goal of the English Department is to encourage and promote literacy, critical thinking, student confidence, and motivation in reading, writing, speaking, and listening through choice reading.
Grade 9 student, Jalen Cuello, from Haverhill, was nominated by English instructor Dr. Marino.
"He has been a diligent reader all term. He turned in his choice reading project ahead of time, but before he did, he asked for feedback and revised the project. He is eagerly on to his next book and project!"
Grade 10 student, Valeria Acosta-Mendoza, from Haverhill, was nominated by English instructor Mr. Antaya.
"The tenth grade English team has chosen Valeria Acosta-Mendoza as our Term 1 recipient of the choice reading award. Val is an avid reader who is always excited to share information on the book she is reading and give suggestions to classmates. She is a perfect example of someone who has developed a love for reading that goes beyond the classroom."
Grade 11 student, Trevor Comora, from Amesbury, was nominated by English instructor Mr. Cunningham.
"For grade 11 choice reading we have decided to go with Trevor Comora. He always seems to have a book in his hands and he loves to discuss what he's reading with others."
Grade 12 student, Za'Nya Townsend, from Haverhill, was nominated by English instructor Ms. Desberg.
"The WT English department is recognizing 12th-grade student Za'Nya Townsend as a reader leader because of her commitment to choice reading, consistently selecting diverse and challenging books that broaden her perspective and enrich her conversations with others in and out of the classroom. Her passion for reading what resonates with her (as of late, it's a lot of poetry!) allows her to explore and embrace the joy of reading independently."
