The Whittier Tech Chapter of SkillsUSA has partnered with the Clean River Project to make a lasting impact on the health of the Merrimack River, a crucial source of drinking water for over 500,000 residents in nearby communities. Through hands-on involvement and innovative solutions, Whittier Tech students are taking action to support the environmental mission of cleaning up the river.
The Clean River Project, led by Rocky Morrison, has made significant strides over the years, pulling nearly 100 cars and more than 20,000 discarded tires from the Merrimack River. With this partnership, Whittier Tech’s SkillsUSA student leaders are putting their decision-making, responsibility, and teamwork skills into practice by committing to raise $2,500 to purchase a “boom” for the Clean River Project. Their fundraising activities will culminate in a school-wide cleanup day and the placement of the sponsored boom, which will help capture and contain debris in the river.
“Our SkillsUSA members are not only learning technical skills but also what it means to be stewards of the environment,” said Jane Moskevitz, Whittier Tech SkillsUSA Lead Advisor. “This project gives our students a unique opportunity to see how their work can directly impact the health of the Merrimack River and the broader community.”
On November 6, students from the CAD, Engineering, and Marine Technology programs visited the Clean River Project’s headquarters in Methuen. During their visit, they toured the facility and witnessed the cleanup efforts in action. The students will continue working alongside their instructors and consulting with Rocky Morrison to develop a conveyor belt system that can be mounted on one of the project’s pontoon boats, making debris removal faster and more efficient.
“This collaboration has opened our eyes to the real-world consequences of pollution and the importance of protecting our waterways,” said Maya Lique, a Whittier Tech SkillsUSA member pursuing CAD Drafting. “It’s empowering to know that we’re part of a project that will have a meaningful, long-term impact.”
