WT’s Model UN Club Competes at UMass Lowell Crisis Conference

Whittier Tech’s Model UN Club attended their first event of the school year on Friday, November 18th and Saturday, November 19th. UMass Lowell hosted their annual crisis conference over the 2-day event.
From UML’s description, “Unlike traditional Model UN simulations, crisis puts delegates into the roles of heads of state, policymakers or government actors responding to some type of crisis. The crisis scenarios may be historical or contemporary, based on real-world events or potential issues that have not come to pass. Regardless, students will use their critical thinking, debate, and logic skills to find a resolution to the crisis.”

The committees were the Invasion of Taiwan, the Mexican Revolution, the Trojan War, the Climate Crisis, and Euromaidan.

Senior London Briley from Amesbury received an award. London received his award for his portrayal of Yuriy Lutsenko in the Euromaidan Council-Pro-Madian faction. Incidentally, London is a two-time award winner.  He started last year in the Model UN Club and received an award last spring as well.

CAD Senior London Briley, of Amesbury, received an award for his portrayal of Yuriy Lutsenko in the Euromaidan Council-Pro-Madian faction.

London needed to research his character and act in the way that he thought his character would respond to the crisis situation.  The crisis evolved throughout the two-day simulation with students from UMass Lowell's International Relations Club reacting to actions taken by students on the Euromaidan Council.

The students represented themselves and the school very well. It was a very exciting crisis conference!  In addition to intense negotiations, there were mock kidnappings and assassination attempts in some of the committees. The students worked very hard and had a lot of fun!  UN meets after school on Thursdays in CAD.  New members of all grade levels are always welcome.  They plan to participate in several additional conferences this school year.
