Whittier Tech Clubs - Halfway Report

As we approach the halfway point of the school year, let’s take a look back at the wonderful events and activities put on by Whittier Tech’s Clubs!

Art Club, led by advisor Mr. Murray, provides a place for students to work on their creativity. Art Club students played a major role in decorating the Whittier Tech Float in the Santa Parade. Art Club students also have their art displayed in a case located on the 3rd floor. Art Club meets every Monday in the Art Room (2106).

Chess Club, led by advisor Mr. Allen, meets every week to battle one another on a chess board. While the competition is serious, fun is had by all who attend. They also discuss various strategies and time-saving tools. Chess Club meets on Thursdays in the Music Room (3030).

DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America), led by advisor Mrs. Grupposo, focuses on encouraging the development of business and leadership skills through academic conferences and competitions. DECA brought students to the district conference in December. They learned a lot about DECA and what opportunities are available to Business, Marketing, and Hospitality students. They are very excited about DECA in 2023. DECA meets every Thursday in Poet’s Inn.

Drama Club, led by advisors Ms. Anderson and Mrs. Bucher, held their second Coffeehouse in October. Ever since then, they have been gearing up for their March performance of “Mamma Mia.” Shows will run the weekend of March 17-19. Drama Club meets after school in the auditorium.

Environmental Club, led by advisor Mr. Burke, started their project of identifying tree species on the Whittier Tech campus. Once they finish, they will work with shops in school to make tree identification plaques to hang. Environmental Club meets every Thursday in room 3110.

GSA (Gender Sexuality Alliance), led by advisors Ms. Staunton and Mr. Charbonneau, has welcomed teachers to show their support as allies at each meeting. Whittier Tech even hosted the District Conference in December for other area GSA clubs and advisors. Haverhill Police attended a GSA meeting to showcase various resources and supports available. GSA meets every Week 1 Tuesday in room 3002.

Interact Club, led by Ms. Calverley, is a Rotary-sponsored service club that provides opportunities for students to participate in fun and meaningful service projects. So far this year, the Interact Club has held a pink hair tinsel fundraiser for Breast Cancer Research, served food at a local food pantry, and wrapped gifts for a Christmas party put on by local organization Ozzie’s Kids. Interact Club meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of every month in the cosmetology salon.

Journalism, led by advisor Mrs. Cashman, puts out a copy of school newspaper each month. Various articles and photos are showcased in each issue. Students write, design, and create the layout of the newspaper in collaboration with staff members. Journalism meets every Week 2 Tuesday in room 3114.

Key Club, led by advisor Mr. Porcelli, completed various volunteering activities so far this year. These activities include: sending Holiday Cards for people in our communities, volunteering at the Sea Festival of Trees in Salisbury, ringing Salvation Army bells, and working at the Santa Breakfast with Santa in Salisbury. Key Club is planning a few more volunteering opportunities for the Spring. Key Club meets every other Monday in the Library.

Model UN, led by advisors Mrs. Brown and Mr. Robertson, attended their first conference of the year in November at the UMass Lowell Crisis Conference. The committees were the Invasion of Taiwan, the Mexican Revolution, the Trojan War, the Climate Crisis, and Euromaidan. Senior London Briley from Amesbury received an award. London received his award for his portrayal of Yuriy Lutsenko in the Euromaidan Council-Pro-Madian faction. The Model UN Club is looking forward to its next conference. Model UN meets every other Thursday in CAD (TC100).

Multicultural Club, led by advisor Mrs. DiMauro, invited WT teachers to share their bilingual background, about our rights under the Consitution. Students shared their heritage and culture. Multicultural Club also ran a My Name, My Identity campaign to raise awareness of the pronunciation of our names. We also collaborated with SkillsUSA to run our annual coat drive. We enjoy friendship and fellowship with each other. Multicultural Club meets the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month in room 4019. 

Peer Leadership, led by advisor Miss Urena, held a Candy Cane Grams event in December where students and staff were able to send a candy cane to someone to show their gratitude. Peer Leadership meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month in room 2107.

Peer to Peer, led by advisor Mrs. Bistany, is a place where students have an opportunity to discuss the things they feel affect the overall well-being of their peers. They are currently planning an Awareness Table where students can dedicate a ribbon in the name of a survivor or cause they support.  Peer to Peer meets every Tuesday in room 2109.

Poetry Club, led by advisors Ms.Bragg and Mrs. Desberg, reads, writes, and shares poetry every week. They also celebrated John Greenleaf Whittier’s birthday back in December with cake! Poetry Club meets on Thursdays in room 3010.

Robotics, led by advisor Mr. Hobbs, was one of the main focal points during the Fall Open House. Robotics had the gym set up to represent their shop and club. They had robots shooting basketballs and other moving blocks. They are gearing up for future competitions with the Maroon Monsoon. Robotics meets every Tuesday in room TC103.

Ski Club, led by advisors Ms. Calverley, Mr. Gastonguay, Mr. Sandlin, and Mr. Blodgett, brought 41 club members to Pat’s Peak on January 6th. Ski Club's next trip is on February 3rd back to Pats Peak after a half day of school and then on Sunday, February 12th, they will be heading to Pico Mountain in Mendon, Vermont. If interested in attending a future Ski Club trip, reach out to one of the advisors mentioned above.

SkillsUSA, led by advisors, Mrs. Moskevitz, Mrs. Costa, and Mr. Boiselle, has brought forth Framework Fridays where each vocational/technical area focuses on one of the essential elements of the SkillsUSA Frameworks. Senior Jaidyn Craig in Medical Assisting from Haverhill attended the Washington Leadership Training Institute in September after being elected SkillsUSA MA President. In November, a group of SkillsUSA students attend the Fall State Leadership Conference. Students are currently getting ready to compete at the District Conference in March. SkillsUSA meets every Thursday in room 3113.

Student Government, led by advisors Miss Devenney and Dr. Marino, held a Spirit Week in October ending with the Class of 2023 declared as winners at the Pep Rally. Later that night, Whittier Tech hosted a Homecoming Dance for the first time in over 20 years. In November, Student Government honored all Whittier Tech staff members who are Veterans with a special breakfast from Poet’s.  Student Government meets every Week 2 Monday in room 3004.

Yearbook, led by advisor Mr. Trainor, plans and creates the Yearbook. They have been diligently working on every aspect, most recently, capturing photos to be included in the Yearbook. Yearbook continuously works on the Yearbook. If interested in joining Yearbook, please reach out to Mr. Trainor.
