Whittier Tech's Extracurricular Activities Update - First Half of the 2023-2024 School Year

As we transition to the second half of the 2023-2024 school year, let’s dive into the accomplishments and endeavors of our clubs. Whittier Tech's vibrant extracurricular landscape has come alive with a diverse array of activities that engage, inspire, and connect students. From academic competitions to community service initiatives, the school's various clubs and organizations have been bustling with energy and enthusiasm.

Let’s see what some of our clubs have been up to:

Art Club

In the Art Club, students have been learning how to glaze pottery and properly load ceramics. They have also been busy constructing masks for the upcoming production of "Mean Girls." Earlier this year, they made significant contributions to the award-winning Santa Parade float.

Chess Club

The Chess Club has seen an increase in membership over the past weeks. During their last meeting, 19 members showed up to prepare for their upcoming blitz tournament. Students will be using timers to play 5-minute blitz games to determine the Blitz Chess Champion.

Drama Club

The Drama Club is currently in full swing with preparations for their spring musical, "Mean Girls." The cast has been rehearsing three to four days a week and will continue to do so until tech week in March.

Environmental Club

The Environmental Club has set up a tower garden for Poet’s Inn and it is now fully operational. Students have been growing herbs in room 3110 and have already supplied the Poet’s Inn with basil and parsley for recent events.

GSA

The GSA has been busy planning their spring events and organizing the next GSA Leadership Council meeting. During the last meeting, students enjoyed creating friendship bracelets and socializing in a safe and supportive environment.

Interact Club

The Interact Club has been actively involved in community service. They recently sent holiday cards to Baker Katz and the Oxford House in Haverhill. Moreover, the club will be participating in community meal service with the Haverhill Rotary Club on January 29th at the Citizens Center in Haverhill.

MultiCultural Club

The MultiCultural Club had a senior member give a captivating presentation about her journey from Pakistan to Whittier Tech. Additionally, club members attended the Bystander Intervention Training, which aimed to equip students with the skills to intervene in difficult situations.

Ski Club

The Ski Club is excited to announce their upcoming trip to Waterville Valley, NH on January 21st. Fifty members of the club will be traveling by coach bus for a day of skiing. The club had a successful raffle in December, which helped cover the travel expenses.

SkillsUSA

The SkillsUSA Chapter at Whittier Tech has been actively preparing for the upcoming District Qualifying Contest/Competition, scheduled for March 14th. In addition Representative Andy Vargas visited the school to promote voting. Students aged 16 and older will have an opportunity in February to pre-register or register to vote.

Student Government

The Student Government shared a speech they wrote to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. They are also in the process of planning fun class events for the spring. Many student government members participated in Mr. Warne's Bystander Training in December and found it to be a valuable experience. Earlier in the school year, they planned a successful Spirit Week and Pep Rally complete with a Homecoming Dance.

This update provides a glimpse into the exciting extracurricular activities that have taken place at Whittier Tech during the first half of the 2023-2024 school year. These clubs and organizations have provided students with opportunities for growth, learning, and community engagement. We look forward to the continued success of these extracurricular activities in the coming months.
