Whittier Tech Grad Receives Post-Secondary Vocational Student Award for Eastern Chapter of MassCTE

Katie Wilkins, a trailblazer in the traditionally male-dominated field of plumbing, has been awarded the MassCTE Post-Secondary Student Award for the Eastern Chapter, and her journey is nothing short of remarkable. Graduating from Whittier Tech in 2021, Katie's commitment to her studies and passion for plumbing set her apart from her peers.

Throughout her time at Whittier, Katie demonstrated exceptional dedication, not only in her academic pursuits but also in her involvement in the school community. Enrolling immediately in evening education courses after graduation to prepare for her plumbing journeyman license test, Katie's attendance and grades were consistently impressive. However, what truly distinguishes Katie is her proactive approach to fostering a sense of belonging within the male-dominated field.

Despite being one of the few females in the plumbing program, Katie took it upon herself to connect with her female peers, offering mentorship and support to ensure they felt valued and included. Her actions go beyond mere obligation; they reflect her genuine passion for promoting diversity and equality within the plumbing profession.

In the face of gender stereotypes and societal expectations, Katie remains undeterred, embracing each challenge with resilience and determination. She has earned admiration not only for her academic achievements but also for her integrity, kindness, and exceptional interpersonal skills. Her willingness to go above and beyond in her studies and professional endeavors has made her a role model for colleagues and mentors alike.

Katie's impending accomplishment of receiving her Journeyman license is a testament to her unwavering dedication and undeniable talent. Her success challenges stereotypes and serves as an inspiration to others, proving that passion and skill know no gender boundaries.

As she continues her journey in the plumbing field, Katie remains committed to furthering her education and expertise. With plans to pursue a master's plumbing license in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, Katie is poised to make even greater contributions to her profession and community.

In recognition of her outstanding achievements and unwavering commitment to excellence, Katie Wilkins is a deserving recipient of the MassCTE Post-Secondary Student of the Year Award. Her story is a testament to the power of passion, hard work, and resilience, and serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring professionals everywhere.

This award was presented at this past weekend’s 91st Annual MassCTE Conference at Patriot Place in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Superintendent Maureen Lynch and Director of Community Partnerships Tia Gerber made the presentation. When sharing her thoughts on Katie’s accomplishments, Mrs. Gerber said, “When asked about her experience as a female plumber – Katie simply shares that she loves what she does. She is challenged daily and the work excites and engages her and she explains that everyone should have the opportunity to find work that makes them feel this way, no matter their field of choice or their gender.”

Congratulations, Katie!
