WT SkillsUSA Kicks Off Fundraiser for Lahainaluna High School

Last night, Whittier Tech hosted our Fall Advisory Board Meeting. During this meeting, Whittier Tech junior Natalie Delano (from Haverhill) kicked off the Whittier Tech SkillsUSA chapter’s fundraising effort to support Lahainaluna High School. Our SkillsUSA chapter is collecting money to purchase scrubs for Lahainaluna’s Health Career students. To donate, head on over to the Whittier Tech school store!

For more about the fundraiser, check out the excerpt below from Delano’s speech:

As most of you are aware, there was a devastating wildfire that started on August 8th on the Island of Maui in the State of Hawaii.

Ironically, this was also to be the first day of school for students living in Lahaina. Nearly 3000 homes and all 4 of the local schools were seriously impacted. Lahainaluna High School, a CTE school like Whittier Tech, was not completely damaged but students were only recently able to return on October 8th.

Because of the overwhelming damage, many students on the island are unable to replace things we take for granted living on the mainland. Sporting goods, laptops, and musical instruments, even uniforms are beyond reach at this time.

What could WE do to show our support ? In the spirit of Aloha (Love),  Kokua (Giving), and most of all Lokahi (Unity).

Our SkillsUSA Chapter has partnered with the Health Careers program at Lahainaluna High school in order to assist these future healthcare workers to have the scrub uniforms they need to attend their clinical practical rotations and coop placement. We hope to raise $2000 to provide uniforms for the 50 students in the Health Careers pathways programs at Lahainaluna High School. Each scrub top will have the Hawaiian word Lokahi, embroidered on the sleeve in honor of our collaboration.

As a Health Assisting student, I personally know how important it is to have access to scrub uniforms. Scrubs keep things such as cross-contamination to a minimum and keep medical professionals as well as patients safe.

While this may seem like quite an accomplishment, Lahainaluna High School’s recovery will be long.

This is where the Whittier Tech community comes into play. We would like you to consider sponsoring a scrub outfit for a student at Lahainaluna High School.

A scrub top/bottom is $20, each, $40 for the set.
