Whittier Tech Recognizes Memorial Day

During this morning’s announcements, Whittier Tech recognized the upcoming Memorial Day Weekend. Principal Laganas introduced Mr. Fox, English Tutor, who served in the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army. Mr. Fox, in collaboration with the Culinary and Hospitality Instructors, set up a Fallen Soldiers Table down at the Poet’s Inn Restaurant.

  • The tablecloth is white, the purity of their intentions in response to their country’s call to arms.

  • The single rose in a vase signifies the blood they may have shed for our freedom.

  • The slide of lemon signifies their bitter fate.

  • The salt reminds us of the many countless tears of families as they wait.

  • The glass inverted, they can’t drink with us tonight.

  • The chair is empty, they are not here.

The morning announcements ended with a beautiful rendition of “God Bless America,” performed by Senior Kai Elliott, from Haverhill.

This annual observance serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by our brave men and women in uniform who have laid down their lives in service to our country. Their unwavering commitment, courage, and sacrifice will forever be etched in our hearts.

Today, we especially remember PFC Evan O’Neill. PFC O’Neill graduated from Whittier Tech in 2002 and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. In 2003, PFC O’Neill made the ultimate sacrifice during a firefight with Taliban forces in Afghanistan.

As we enjoy this long weekend of remembrance, let us remember that Memorial Day is not just about barbecues, parades, or the unofficial start of summer. It is a time for reflection, reverence, and remembrance. It is a time to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we may live in freedom.

Let us remember those who have served and those who continue to serve. Let us cherish the values they fought for and uphold the ideals that make our nation strong. May we never forget the debt we owe to those who gave everything for our country.

As we carry on with our celebrations, let us do so with a deep sense of gratitude, humbled by the sacrifices of our fallen heroes. Let us honor their memory by cherishing the freedoms they fought to protect and by striving for a world of peace, justice, and equality.

Today, we stand together in solemn remembrance and profound appreciation. May the spirit of Memorial Day resonate in our hearts and guide us in our daily lives. Let us always remember, honor, and never forget.

In observance of Memorial Day, there will be no school on Monday, May 29, 2023.
